Chapter Sixteen

"What did you say to that, Mom?" asked Hunter.

"I would have told her to stuff it," said Skylar. I frowned at him, because I knew I should, though that had been the first thought to cross my mind.

I had finally made it home after the long meeting, steaming mad. I tried so hard the rest of the meeting not to blow up at the people of my beloved community. It seems all they could talk about was Harvey and the new Chief. And when their tongues start to wag, most were negativity guised as "trying to be helpful". If only they spent more time on working with our police force instead of talking about the new boss, the whole situation could be solved and in the past.

One consensus: Chief Flint had not made any friends. It seems every time he had dinner in a restaurant, members of the community or the owners tried to give him a free meal as a welcome gift, but he refused their generosity and insisted on leaving his own money. This made it hard for anyone to accept the Chief and talk to him. Yes, they answered his questions, but didn't volunteer any helpful details.

As for Harvey, the views were mixed. About half the people liked him. The other half thought he was "sneaky", which meant different things to each of them.

At the top of my list of all things sneaky was Grace Montgomery.

"Mrs. Montgomery just wants Grandma's secret recipe because Mom always wins at the fair for her sweet soft cookies," Audrey stated. "It makes Mrs. Montgomery mad to lose to anyone, especially Mom, because everyone knows Mom can't cook."

"Thanks for the vote of confidence, I think," I said wryly. "You do know that you wouldn't starve to death if I had to take over the cooking, right?"

Audrey came and hugged me, "Oh, Mom, we know that. It is just the best division of labor and time to have Dad cook for us, since you teach us. It is just a plus that it tastes better, too." She smiled, running around the counter, ducking back out of my reach.

My children know all about the secret family recipe and helped to bake it every year. Thursday afternoon we would work together to mix, bake, cool and wrap them individually for sale at the fund raiser. They also knew not to tell anyone the secret to the recipe.

"What did you tell her?" inquired Emily.

"I was as polite as I could be." I started to lecture about manners. "Sweetness is the best defense at times like these. Getting angry is just what they want."

Travis cut in, "Mom, we know! What did you tell her...please?" he added sweetly, attempting to prove he already knew the lesson.

Nodding that I recognized his effort, "I said thank you so much for the offer. However, it was our whole town that was assaulted by this event, and our new chief will need all our help to solve the crime. I felt
